Ronald Reagan’s Legacy

He would have been 100 years old this Sunday. A documentary about our 40th President airs on HBO on Monday night. No doubt a portion of this recording will be included. This 10minute LP entitled “Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine” was distributed by the American Medical Association in 1961, in an effort to stem the passing of Medicare. Reagan was just a former actor at that point, he wouldn’t be elected Governor of CA for another five years. But he and the AMA, brilliantly, targeted health care provided by the government as socialism and the argument is still feverishly made 50 years later.

Here are some of the phrases used in the piece.

“The government invaded the precincts of private citizens…”

“Threat is with us and more imminent… socialized medicine.”

“…your son won’t decide when he’s in school, where he will go or what he will do for a living. He will wait for the government to tell him.”
