Freezing Out Hope

Paul Krugman’s columns are hardly ever “cheerful” in any respect. His new one out today headlined “Freezing Out Hope” is about a bleak a picture of our president from a liberal-sided columnist that one can imagine. If the President were to lose his office in two years, this column will surely be counted as one of the turning points. Seriously.

The main point of the piece is criticizing the President’s move to freeze Federal workers salaries over the next two years. It’s a clear “concession” of the president to limit Federal spending, but as Krugman accurately points out

… transparently cynical; it was trivial in scale, but misguided in direction; and by making the announcement, Mr. Obama effectively conceded the policy argument to the very people who are seeking — successfully, it seems — to destroy him. The actual savings, about $5 billion over two years, are chump change given the scale of the deficit.

Krugman sees this as the clear indicator President Obama isn’t made of much mettle. Next couple of moves before the State of the Union will be interesting indeed.
