Not much “Do.” In fairness, the President is fairly limited on what he can do. Mis-management when it comes to natural disasters = Government’s fault. Mis-management when it comes to industry disaster = No one’s at fault.
The President made a speech in the Rose Garden today remarking his frustration with the oil spill clean-up thus far in the gulf. He pulled no punches:
I did not appreciate what I considered to be a ridiculous spectacle during the congressional hearings into this matter. You had executives of BP and Transocean and Halliburton falling over each other to point the finger of blame at somebody else. The American people could not have been impressed with that display, and I certainly wasn’t.
I will not tolerate more finger pointing or irresponsibility.
Slaps on the wrists to companies worth hundreds of billions of dollars don’t much matter. The clean up does. And this is a somewhat empty threat. “Will not tolerate” further mismanagement? Fine. What are we going to do? Make the CEOs wear a dunce cap.
