Movie Posters as Art

Fewer and fewer American movie one-sheets can legitimately be called “artwork.” Lots of reasons for this. Stars’ influence on ad campaigns is one. Studios less likely to make “risky” choices on advertising. They are beginning to have a generic appearance by genre. Luckily, foreign films are less trapped by these circumstances.  Biutiful from Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams) premieres and Cannes this week.

Simple, but definitely eye-catching. Another genuinely effective one is this teaser one-sheet for The Dark Knight.

One of my all-time favorites is Silence of the Lambs. You have to pay close attention to the skull on the moth to see how seriously creepy this one-sheet is. Have any favorites? Love to hear them.
