A blast in a subway station caused by two suicide bombers has killed at least 38 people. No official release of what organization planned the bombings, though the fact that one bomb went off at a station near the Moscow FSB headquarters (successors to the KGB) during prime commuter traffic absolutely suggests the work of “terrorist rebels from the restive Caucasus region that includes Chechnya.”
Thoughts and prayers go toward the falled and their families. Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin, cut short a trip to Siberia, returning to Moscow to oversee the federal response. Mr. Putin built his reputation in part on his success at suppressing terrorism, so the attacks could be considered a challenge to his stature.
Mr. Putin vowed that “the terrorists will be destroyed.”
