Don’t Ask Don’t Tell hearings

Happening today. Secretary Gates speaking to the Senate Armed Services Committee.  He has offered we take a year to study the issue then come up with a solution to suggest to Congress. “The study is intended to prepare us. Frankly there have been studies done, but none by the military.” Gates said under testimony. Admiral Mike Mullen, Head of the Joint Chiefs went more personal.

“No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens,” Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said it was his personal and professional belief that “allowing homosexuals to serve openly would be the right thing to do.”

He went on to say that “allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.” No study is needed. The study has been going on since the law implemented. We’ve seen over 10,000 servicemen and women discharged. This law is an embarrassment. Let’s swipe it, move on and let integrity and decency prevail.

The NY Times has the story here. Andrew Sullivan’s take is here. Definitely worth a read.
