History in Houston?

This Saturday is election day in Houston, TX for the new mayor. Current Houston mayor Bill White can’t run due to term limits and he is focusing his attention to the Governor race in 2010. The two leading candidates are Democrats Gene Locke (right), former City Attorney, and Annise Parker (left), City Controller. As two local Dem candidates go there isn’t much ideological difference between the two. Both have strong experience with the city and are trying to wade through tough financial times with their campaign promises. There is also the off-election-year factor and only the base-of-the-base turns out for.

Oh, the other thing. The fact that Annise Parker is openly gay, and if elected Houston would become the largest populous to ever elect an openly gay mayor by a wide margin. It would not only be history, but potentially a seismic event in the steps towards gay equality in our country. The Daily Beast has a story on the subject.

Here is Annise Parker’s web site. Here is Gene Locke’s web site.
