A Family Business

In Funny People, now out in theaters, there is a pivotal scene that revolves around one of the main character’s daughter singing “Memory” from the musical Cats. Why is this interesting? The young actress performing is Maude Apatow, the writer/director Judd Apatow’s daughter. His other daughter Iris is also in Funny People and the director’s wife Leslie Mann plays their mother (similar situation on the film Knocked Up). According to an interview Judd Apatow did with NPR, the footage of his daughter singing is from one of her actual after-school plays.

On this subject, I’ve come up with a list of family collaborations (for better or worse) in the movies. Have any that I didn’t think of?  Please comment away.

Good:

  • Charlie Sheen at odds against his dad Martin Sheen in Wall Street. It makes for a great payoff in Hot Shots: Part Deux.
  • Frances McDormand playing Marge in Fargo, co-written and directed by her husband Joel Coen.
  • In That Thing You Do, Tom Hanks cast his wife, Rita Wilson, as a busty cocktail waitress. Sweet.
  • The Brothers Wilson (Andrew, Luke and Owen) have all been on screen together, the best is still Bottle Rocket.
  • John and Joan Cusack have appeared in ten movies together, my favorite is Grosse Point Blank.
  • Leslie Mann in her brief appearance in her husband’s The 40 Year-Old Virgin. French Toast!

Bad:

  • Sofia Coppola in The Godfather III remains one of the most infamous family castings in film history. She’s a wonderful director, but a horrible choice for this movie.
  • Jon Voight shares a scene with his daughter Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.  Welcome to Crazytown, Population 2.
  • Christine Taylor is in several  of her husband Ben Stiller’s movies, notably in Zoolander, much to movie-goers chagrin.
  • Ivan Raimi co-wrote Spiderman 3 with his brother Sam, also the director. Easily the worst of the three.
  • Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Far and Away. Stay far, and away from this movie.
  • Leslie Mann in way too much of her husband’s Funny People.

  1. What about Ryan O’Neal and Tatum O’Neal in Paper Moon??

Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara in Zoolander?

Also, in The Anniversary Party, Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates play parents to their real-life son and daughter, Owen and Greta Kline, respectively.

Oh, and Eva Amurri, daugher of Susan Sarandon, played her daughter in The Banger Sisters.

and to add to your “Bad” section, in the husband directing his wife category…Guy Ritchie. Madonna. Swept Away. No, I didn’t see it.

On the subject of husband directing wife, we must of course mention Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter.

    ok, i’m done.

    for now.

  2. I’ve heard Paper Moon is great, but we only listed movies we have seen. And I ain’t seen that one.

    Good call on Anniversary Party.

and, technically speaking, Burton and Carter aren’t married, and if we included non-married couples. Yeah, that’d be a pretty long damn list.
