Proof That Our Government Can Do Good Things

The “Post 9/11 GI Bill” that President Bush signed last year was put into effect this week.

In short this bill provides veterans assistance with college tuition, specifically those who have served since September 10, 2001, modeled after the original GI Bill that President Roosevelt signed in 1944. The bill includes a full cost of an in-state, undergraduate tuition. As well as a books/supplies stipend and a monthly housing allowance.

President Obama marked the occasion with a speech to veterans at George Mason University in Virginia.  Former Virginia Senator John Warner and current Virginia Senator Jim Webb were present, both are veterans.

Senator Webb, elected in 2006, put forward this legislation on his first day in office.  Then Senator Obama was an early co-sponsor of the bill.

More specifics of the bill are at the bottom of this Wa Po article.

  1. Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.

  2. And to make Jim Webb even cooler, he’s also spearheaded an investigation that will possibly result in the overhaul of this nation’s entire prison/criminal justice system.
